Does the old "top-down" pyramid-style management chart still work? If your answer is no, here are some tips on inverting the period for your organization:
- Challenge employees to come up with their own better ways to do their jobs. Their suggestions will be valuable.
- Seek out ideas from everyone, not just people directly involved in the task. Sometimes it helps to get creative input from people removed from the subject matter.
- Treat people honestly and with respect. Explain the reasons for decisions. Keep them in the loop at all times, not guessing what you're thinking.
- Spread authority around. If the receptionist is the best one to make a given decision, the receptionist should make it.
