It’s important—especially to employees—that the information on your W-2s matches the Social Security Administration’s W-2 info. According to the Social Security Administration, here are the most common W-2 mistakes:

  • Incorrect name or number
  • Incorrect format
  • Misspelled names
  • Nicknames or shortened names
  • Using titles before or after the name (such as Jr. or Sr.)
  • Names not reported to Social Security (such as in the case of a marriage)
  • Not using hyphens with compound names (you should write Diane Smith-Johnson, not Diane Smith Johnson)
