Recently, someone asked Workforce, "Can I ask one of my employees to take on a receptionist's job, for which he or she is overqualified, for a given amount of time—maybe even permanently?"

The short answer is "Yes." As long as you are not violating any employment contract, collective-bargaining agreement, discrimination or other laws (such as the law concerning exemptions from the Fair Labor Standards Act and overtime), you can assign and reassign employees however you want.
