Helen Darling, longtime leader of the National Business Group on Health, recently announced that she will retire at the end of April 2014 after 12 years as president and CEO of the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit employer coalition.

“Helen has been an outstanding leader and is widely considered one of the most influential and innovative authorities on health care in America,” NBGH board chair Pamela Kimmet said in a statement. “Helen is a true visionary and under her leadership for the past 12 years, the Business Group has been transformed into a major force shaping health care policy and practices for its member companies.”Helen Darling

Darling said in a statement that she is “ready to retire from such an intense full-time job.” Brian Marcotte, vice president of compensation and benefits at Honeywell International Inc., will take over May 1. Darling plans to serve as a senior adviser to assist with the transition through the end of 2014.

“I have had the privilege of being in health care and health policy for more than 30 years and helped shape employers’ responses to their many challenges,” Darling said in the statement. “It has been a thrill to work with so many iconic, creative companies, including in the past three years, during which we have seen tectonic changes.”

Before joining the organization, Darling was a consultant at Towers Watson & Co. and Mercer and a benefits manager at Xerox Corp. Earlier in her career, she was a staff member on the Senate Finance Committee.
