There is a reason abusive leaders are much discussed in organizational development and HR circles – the majority of people have worked for one. At least 50 percent — and as many as 75 percent — of managers will fail, and psychologist Paul Babiak showed as many as one in 25 business leaders may be psychopaths. Those are grim odds, and they have a big impact.

Managerial competence directly impacts employee engagement, and nationwide, only 30 percent of U.S. employees are engaged, with nearly one in five employees actively disengaged. Employee engagement impacts customer ratings, profitability, productivity, turnover, safety incidents, absenteeism and theft, all of which add up to an estimated $300 billion in lost revenue every year.

Fortunately, by reevaluating their leadership selection processes, companies can reduce the number of toxic leaders in their ranks.
