What should you keep in a personnel file?

Here is one guideline: If you do not want the employee to ever see a document, do not save it in a personnel file. Many states require an employer to give employees access to the personnel file upon request. Even if there is no such statute, an employee could get access to the information through discovery in a lawsuit.
