HRPS Publication Takes Strategic Focus

While the Society for Human Resource Management’s rebranding efforts highlight that HR is its middle name, the Human Resource Planning Society has decided to remove an HR reference from the title of its flagship publication.

    Starting in March, the quarterly journal formerly known as Human Resource Planning will be called People & Strategy.

    The change reflects a growing emphasis on the strategic dimensions of the profession. Executive editor Ed Gubman says that articles in the magazine will appeal to the HRPS membership, which tends to be from the top ranks of a company.

    "Our society is made up of more senior people," Gubman says. "They’re making business decisions for their organizations."

    The magazine has been evolving toward a wider perspective, according to Gubman. Its articles will be broad in scope, helping readers to understand "how they can better deploy people to achieve business results," he says. "We’re hitting big issues as opposed to HR processes."

    The March issue will feature pieces on leadership and talent management as well as a section that touches on HR challenges in Asia. In June, the magazine will produce a special edition focusing on CEO issues like leadership, ethics, values, development and compensation.

    Previous special editions explored innovation and sustainability. The magazine also has recently tackled HR’s role in organizational change that fosters business growth.

    Remaking the publication also involves increasing its reach. Currently, it is sent to the approximately 3,000 HRPS members and about 600 universities and libraries. The goal is to boost circulation to 7,000 by 2011.
