With the threat of massive worker strikes on several fronts all but assured for Sept. 20, it appears businesses in India are already planning for what's being called a nationwide shutdown.
Business outsourcing provider Infosys BPO, based in Bangalore, told Workforce.com it is closing its offices Sept. 20 as a result of the nationwide strike. The company is a subsidiary of Infosys Ltd. and has more than 21,000 employees around the world.
Indian trade unions called for a nationwide strike to protest India's opening of its retail sector to international retailers Walmart and Tesco. Additionally, thousands of transportation workers plan a one-day strike Sept. 20 to protest rising diesel costs.
