Conseco Brings Home Customer Service Jobs

April 28, 2004
Cultural differences, the World Trade Center terrorist attack, and high turnover are among the reasons cited by Conseco, Inc. for bringing jobs back to the United States it had once exported to India.

“We gave it a shot and it didn’t work,” Dave White, Conseco’s senior vice president of policy services, told the Indianpolis Star.

Indiana-based insurer Conseco earned a reputation as a pioneer in outsourcing when it moved 800 jobs to India three years ago. Former CEO Gary Wendt told the newspaper he expected savings of up to $60 million a year. Now Wendt is gone, along with hopes of huge savings.  Most of the jobs have returned to Indiana, the newspaper said.
