Use the J-1 Visa to Tap into Global Talent

The H-1B visa gets tapped out quickly, and can be expensive. Another alternative is the J-1. While the H-1B is used for longer-term assignments, the J-1 is used for training employees.

For example, Gillette uses the J-1 to bring in star employees from its Latin America office for managerial training at the corporate headquarters.

Guidelines for the J-1 visa are as follows:

  • The position to be assumed by the international candidate must be for the purpose of training, not worker substitution;
  • The training period may last for up to 18 months; and
  • The applicant must be at least 18 years old with education or employment experience in the proposed field of training.
