Hello! Does anybody know if individuals (who were laid off due to lack of work) can receive unemployment compensation while receiving severance? I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but our company is located in Ohio. I checked out the ODJFS website but did not see an answer to this. Thanks!

Sorry, but the Ohio unemployment folks would be the ones to answer this. Many states do maintain that severance pay is continuation of regular pay and UI benefits won't start until the end of the severance period. Some of these states, however, take the view that a lump sum severance payment paid on or about the last date of employment is not wages for UI purposes and UI benefits can therefore commence upon completion of whatever elimination time period that state has in place.
