Hi All, In another week I will be heading up the HR dept of a non-profit organization, while I have managerial experience, I don't have Hr experience. I have a first degree in HR & will be starting the second degree this fall. Problem is I'm not sure where to start??? this dept is new to the company as well..so during the first couple of months what do I concentrate on?, where do I begin???

Is this company your current employer, and you're taking on a new role?

Also, what were the drivers that led to the creation of this new position? What were the pains that the organization was experiencing and what were the perceived opportunities?
Secondly, you could run a HR audit to get a picture of where the org is at. Thirdly, you could interview your stakeholders (CEO, managers, cross section of employees) to gauge their expectations of your role.

No,this job is with a new company.... Its actually a relief & development organization, and so their focus was helping those on the outside!,but recently they realized their staff had similar needs (among others)as the ones they were meeting elsewhere, hence the inception of a HR dept...which they've had over a year now.
I like the suggestion of the HR Audit, thank you, cause then I'd be able to see what was been done & what to add...long road ahead!

I have worked for start-ups a couple of times in my career. First I usually tied to get a handle on what functions are going to fall under HR in this company (Benefits, Payroll, Recruiting, Record keeping etc). Then start prioritizing my to-do list. You can get help on some things like emp. handbooks and policies.
Good luck

I have been with a start up for 1.5 years as office/hr manager; I second the idea of the HR audit - make sure you are in compliance with proper posters, hr policies/ee handbooks, etc. Then meet with the management team or each mgr individually to get a feel for what they need, don't have but want, what's doable and not. Don't get overwhelmed, though!
