When considering appropriate responses to confirmed incidents of workplace harassment, employers are advised to take action that effectively deters recurrence of such conduct. This may include retraining employees about harassment, republishing the employer’s policy on such matters and disciplinary action against responsible parties.

The protections include those against discrimination based on race or perceived racial group in recruiting, hiring and advancement, and against classification based on race or color, such as in the area of work assignments. In the 2007 fiscal year, the commission received more than 30,000 charges of race discrimination, its Web site says. The information on the site can help employers ensure that they are in compliance with Title VII.
