I'm wanting to develop a PTO plan in lieu of sick/vacation/personal days. Any ideas for a good resource? I have many questions as to how to structure it. Thanks.

We currently have a PTO program but it is based on a number of personal, floating holidays and vacation. The difference is that we convert all our time off into hours. Ex. we work 37.5hrs/wk, therefore there are 7.5 hours/day. When a person takes time off they report PTO time for 7.5 hours. Payroll then subtracts their personal and floating time off first, then their vacation carryover and then the vacation days. Employees are eligible to carryover as many days as they are eligible for. With this method, as long as employees are taking time off, they will not lose their personal and floating holidays. Sick time is based on occurrences and is subject to management discretion.

My employees earn 1.25days every month for the first five years of employment. This gives them 15 days per year to use for PTO, sick, vacation or whatever else they need off for. From 5-10 years employees earn 1.5 days every month.

So far, this has worked really well for all employees and managers.

We are trying to institute a PTO as well, my question as to do with exempt buying additional PTO. How is that done and does that pose a problem under wage and hour laws?
