My company does not currently offer a paid maternity or paternity leave benefit (outside of vacation, sick or STD leave). I found from SHRM that 50% of companies surveyed recently offer this benefit, but the survey did not ask about how long this benefit was. How many weeks do companies provide in paid maternity/paternity leave?

Paying for maternity leave varies considerably in my benefits consulting experience. Beyond what is required by FMLA, the mother usually takes sick leave or goes on disability (or a combination depending on plan design). Some organizations allow as much as 6 months of unpaid leave during which time accrued leave banks (such as vacation)can be exhausted. The figure you quoted of 50% offering paid leave could just mean that the employee is able to take the time she has accrued, not that paid maternity is an additional benefit.
