Woud anyone have an RFP or Bid Specs they'd be willing to share for Benefits Consulting services? The company our consultant works for no longer does just consulting, they want to take over administration of our plan - or nothing. My Commissioners don't want that. Anyone? Thanks!

Tess,

For the past 6 months, several of us at my company are going through the process of selecting a new employee benefits broker/consultant. Here are the steps we have taken:

1. We sent an invitation to several brokers to submit a conceptual proposal on what services they can provide us and what the costs are. We asked for samples of their work, communication pieces, and several client references. We gave them brief information about our company and our employee benefits. We analyzed their responses extensively.

2. We sent a second letter asking them how would they approach the market to solicit bids for our various plans, to provide us a sample RFP that they use, to provide us a sample analysis of the bidding process, and how would the transition to another medical carrier be handled?

3. We took several more steps (that I would not necessarily recommend) and now are ready to have the brokers on-site for a formal presentation (45 min. to 1 hour). We have several questions that we will ask all to respond to. Based on this, we will select our broker/consultant.

Don't hestitate to ask about them to disclose the fees they will charge for their services. You'll either pay these direct to them or they will receive commissions from the plans you have with the various carriers. Make sure you know what you are paying.

Hope this helps. It's a difficult task. If you have questions, e-mail me at jofficer@southwestern.com
