I'm doing my thesis on HR in high-tech firms. I'm interested in hearing from anyone who has any experience with benefits in high-tech firms aimed at the aquisition and retention of top creative and technical employees. I'd like to know what your firm is offering (or has offered in the past) in the way of benefits and if/ how you think these benefits have worked (or not worked) to your firm's advantage in hiring and retaining employees.

Feel free to contact me directly or through this website. Thanks for your help!

My wife works in the very competitive ecommerce industry; specifically, a company that develops and hosts websites for large ecommerce enterprises. This company recently revamped it's benefits program and its rather remarkable. Keep in mind that this industry is extraordinarily competitive when it comes to hiring ecommerce techies.

Health insurance for both employees and their dependents is totally free. No co-pays and no deductibles (this is a PPO, not an HMO, plan which makes it even more remarkable). Unlimited sick days (you're trusted on this one) and 4 weeks of vacation. No cost for dental. Usual holidays. Long term disability is employer provided; short term is 100% of salary for 90 days of disability.

It's a very feature rich plan, and the HR director received 4 standing ovations when it was announced. A plan like this is designed to retain folks; even if one received an offer elsewhere, it'd have to be quite generous to overcome these benefits.
And there are stock options to be considered as well; this is a pre-IPO company going public fairly soon, so these things are probably worth a bunch of $$$$$$.

I, on the other hand, work in a less competitive albeit high tech firm. 2 weeks vacation, 1 week sick; $25 copay for an HMO plan/month and $115 per month for dependents. Not as good, but we don't have a turnover issue so there's no compelling need to change.

Dear "nork1":

I tried to e-mail you , but the e-mail you listed on workforce didn't work...

Thanks very much for your response to my posting on Workforce Online
about benefits in high-tech firms. I found your comments really
interesting, and I wonder if you and/ or your wife would be willing to
be interviewed for my dissertation. I am more than happy to provide
you with academic and professional references as well as a more detailed
description of my dissertation project if you are interested. An interview
would take no more than an hour (probably much less) either in person
or over the phone (depending on your personal preference and location).
In fact, I'd be grateful for as much or as little of your time as you feel you
could provide. I'll be in the San Francisco Bay Area over the Summer (June-August), when interviews would take place. If you would like more information or are interested,
please e-mail me. Thank you for your time and help! I hope to hear from you.
