a manager is moving farther away from the office and would like to switch to four 10 hour days. My biggest concern is that it may set a precedent that others may want to move to four 10 hour days as well. Are my concerns legitimate? It seems that four 10 hour days are not as productive as five 8's. Does anyone have experience with this issue?

That practice has been popular among a variety of industries in our region. Based on an informal survey, my counterparts have found the 10 hour employees more effective than the 5 day 8 hour employees.

Based on my personal experience, the 10 hour people were more productive, happier and usually had agendas on the days that they worked.

Some companies are using it as a perk because potential candidates are looking for more flexibility.

We have offered flexible work arrangements for several years now and began the program with both a 4/5 and 9/10 schedule. Due to a decrease in productivity, we eliminated the 4/5 arrangement and just have the 9/10 program. It is easier to manage and keeps the employee happy.
