Dear Workforce,
We are a new software company but expanding and have come up with the
question, what is the appropriate number of sick days one should be given a
year? And should it be granted time (use it or lose it) or accrued? I am
mostly wondering what is the norm in corporations across America.
Sincerely,

I work with employers across all industries in relation to their paid leave plans - for your industry there is no norm for offering sick days - some of the more innovative approaches to paid leave are coming out of high tech. One major software co. doesn't offer an accrual of sick days b/c employees are not measured by the hours they work - if your're sick you just stay out and coworkers bring you soup!
What about considering a PTO plan? It's more flexible, fair to all regardless of lifestyle, and by design rewards good attendance.

I recently implemented a sick-days policy for our small software company. We decided 5 days given at employment anniversary date, and they expire at each anniversary (no roll-over)... When I came across your posting mentioning paid time off (PTO) it got my attention because I've been meaning to look into this. Will someone give me the scoop on PTO, please?

We are a 200 person engineering firm and we have an unlimited sick time policy. When an employee hits 10 days in a calendar year they are spoken to unless there is a continuing medical problem. We average 3 sick days per year per employee.

My nonprofit association provides 12 paid sick leave days per year. They can accumulate to 160 days, and upon retirement from the association unused sick leave days are added to an employee's length of service when calculating retirement benefits.

Lisa -
The number of sick days granted is one of the benefits we benchmark in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Employee Benefits Survey. In 1996, participating companies offered an average of 11 days per year. However, the number of days offered significantly based on other factors (i.e., size, region, etc.) ... half of participating companies offered less than 8 days per year.
If you are interested in benchmarking your benefit offerings, please consider participating in the 2000 Study as detailed above.

Cathie, can you direct me to source documentation supporting your statement that California does not permit use it or lose it plans? We recently merged with a California operation that has dissimilar paid time off policies, and we need to coordinate benefits by year-end. I am in Arizona, and unfamiliar with California law in this matter.
Thank you!
