My company is working putting short- and long-term disability in place. We are a very young company and presently have less than 20 employees, but will be growing to at least 50 by the end of this year. I'd like to know what the industry standards are regarding providing this insurance. For example, what percentage of small/medium/large employers provide it?

(if this link gets messed up, what I did was go to www.workforcetools.com and clicked on general benefits, and then benefits admin)

Most large employers do, but medium-sized vary in the type of plans or whether they offer it at all. I consult almost exclusively in this area, and for small companies depending on your industry and need to be competitive - it varies. I've seen small companies grow very quickly in a couple years and have to rethink the benefits they started out offering b/c it just wasn't practical ($$) to offer the same level of disability benefit for a much larger group. As you tackle this, think about where your company expects to be in 3 - 5 years.

I usually see 60% of salary capped at a certain point, not including bonuses and commissions, and usually full time disability only. A way to make this better is to offer that as a base and offer supplemental coverage at a group discount where the employee pays for it out of his own pocket if he wants it.
