I am researching what kinds of maternity plans Internet start-up companies are offering their employees. I work for a start-up and we are trying to build a policy that is fair, attractive to new employees but won't break the bank. Does anyone have examples of what kinds of policies they provide? Paid, unpaid, # of weeks, etc. Your help is greatly appreciated Thank you!

I work for an Internet start up and recently came back from maternity leave. We had 4 employees when I found out and 10 when I had the baby. Because I was the first person that ever put the company in this situation I was able to tell them what I needed or wanted.

The company was very understanding and flexible. I was due at the end of January and by November we decided I would cut back my hours after Christmas and from then they were prepared that I may not be in the next day or for a couple months. I told them I wanted to take 6-8 weeks off (unpaid) depending on how long I worked before the baby came. I chose a date 7 seven weeks after the baby's due date to return to work but it was open to negotiation.

As it turned out I worked upto the day I went into labor (the baby was 4 days late) and I came back to work on the date we set back in November.

I think the most importnant thing to remember is be consistent but also be flexible. Babies often have their own idea of when to appear and can take everyone by surprise.

Did you take the time off unpaid? I also work for an internet start up and am looking for competitive data.

Thanks!

I work as an outsourced HR department for start ups.
Depending on the state, your employees can be covered under Short Term Disability during their leave as well as FMLA (Depending on length of service). This should allow your policy to incorporate a general benefit program along side your required programs giving your employees a feeling that they have a competitive policy even in the start up environment. What we see most of our clients do is pay the difference btw the employees salary and the short term disability. This allows them to pay a great benefit to the employee without breaking the bank.
