I work for a company of 180 employees in Washington, DC. We are trying to find a new insurance company with better service for next year. Are there any ways to obtain the group insurance for a small business like us, other than relying on our insurance broker? Thanks!

You could contact other companies in your industry and find out if they have formed a group for insurance purposes or ask them if they could recommend an insurance company. Sometimes industry organizations offer group insurance. Or try the Chamber of Commerce. Members are offered the opportunity to join the insurance group (at least in our area). Good Luck.

Sounds like you have lost confidence in your broker and it may be time to look for a new one.
A good broker will search the market for you, prepare a comprehensive analysis of the quotes received and make a reccomendation. If you try to do this on your own, it will be a very confusing process. A quality broker is doing this several times a month for clients, whereas you may only do this once a year.
We can reccomend a good broker in your area.E-mail- gbenefit@bellsouth.net

You can also take a look at Professional Employer Organizations (PEOs). They are available to help smaller companies outsource many of the human resource functions including benefit offering. The benefits offered compare to a larger companies offerings. If you have further questions please email me back.

We could do something a little different for you. We do Defined Contribution Health and Welfare Plans. You could reduce your current health insurance and reduce your costs and establish individual accounts for employees. You could put in money and they could put in money. The money in the plan would be used for whatever the employee wants ie. more bells and whistles for the health insurance, to pay deductibles, or for other benefits. This allows you to reduce your costs and allow employees who need the better plan to buy it and those who don't can buy something else. You can also structure cost recovery into the plan and use it to offer post retirement health.

Let me know if you have any questions.
