Beyond the federal and state requirements, what do you offer your employees in terms of Medical (and more specifically Maternity) leaves of absence?
- Are the leaves paid or unpaid?
- Do you have any requirements for use of vacation time?
- How much time beyond FMLA do you allow an employee to take?
- How do you handle employees who have not completed one year of service?
- Any other tidbits would be helpful.

Our company requires that paid time off be used during any medical leave, including maternity. Once the paid time off leave has been exhausted, the employee is on leave without pay through the 12 week FMLA leave. At the end of the 12 week period, if the employee does not come back to work AND does not have a medical reason, we will inform the employee that they must return to work. If the employee fails to return to work within 3 days of the end of the 12 week leave, the employee is deemed to have voluntarily quit. This is all spelled out in our personnel policies very clearly. Employees who have not completed one year of service are handled in the same manner.
