I would like to propose a change to our current vacation policy. Currently our employees accrue 10 days of vacation starting from their first day worked and they are allowed to start using their vacation one year from their hire date. The vacation time does not increase to 15 vacation days until their 8th year of employment. I have decided to propose several different options, but my concern is that the employees who have been here and have already earned their 15 days would be angry that they had to wait 8 years to do so. Should they be compensated for what they would have earned based on whatever new accrual rate is decided upon? Is it a requirement to do so under federal law? North Carolina does not require vacation time to be offered at all, it's at the discretion of the employer.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

I went through a similar scenario 5 years ago. When I joined the organization, hourly employees had to wait 7 years for their 3rd week of vacation. We made the change to 5 years for 3 weeks. There was some grumbling from longer tenured employees. However, my take on it is that things change and evolve in the workplace all the time. When I first entered the workforce in 196???? Minimum wage was something like $1.25 per hour. Well now the minimum is $6.50 in Missouri.I would not compensate employees who had to wait 8 years.

i know this is an old post, but just in case someone is reading these topics at a later date..... if there are employees who met the 5 years lets say 2 years ago, why not just backdate vacation accruals for those employees who are currently employed at the time the accrual change takes place. give them additional days off or pay in lieu. then no hard feelings. just a thought
