PeopleTicker provides market rate estimates for contingent labor and contractors, but from what I've heard this is a very very pricey tool. Has anyone used it? Are there any other tools specifically to provide estimates for contingent/contractual labor?

Thank you.

Take the hourly rates you'd pay for employees to do this type of work and bump 'em upwards by 25% or so.

Is this a rough estimate or are there any studies that provide estimates based on actual data?

Thanks.

It's more of a standard rule of thumb than a rough estimate. I don't know about any studies supporting it. You could try contacting agencies that provide independent contractors and ask them what they think of this rule of thumb.

Agencies are usually negotiable, but will typically mark up the hourly rate by 35%, unless you have a contract or agreement with the agency. If you try and negotiate with them, 20-30% is a good ballpark. They'll still receive enough to cover their obligations and receive a profit.

The advice above is sound. 35% is typically the MSRP but they'll go lower and especially so if they see a long term opportunity with you or if you'll be hiring a number of contractors through them. Avoid any agency which will not negotiate unless the contractors are in such huge demand that the agency doesn't have to.
