Is there any data available that states what percentage of US employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule compared to those paid semi-monthly?

Do you have an outside third party payroll provider? If so, I would ask for their stats.

But usually what I have seen is split 50/50.

Mostly for business reasons such as :
(1) How many hourly/overtime employees exist (those with high amounts usually prefer biweekly)
(2) What union contracts state must happen
(3) What state laws state must happen
(4) What is preferred by those making the decision

There are pros and cons to each. The biggest con of biweekly is that once every 11 or so years, you will get a year with 27 payrolls.
