Our EAP offers financial planning as a one-day seminar. Has anyone provided this to staff and is it worth it? It seems questionable since you'll be inviting staff from both ends of the pay spectrum, whose questions should be very different!

Thanks for any experience.

It is my experience that you should not introduce any "financial planning" seminars into the workplace. Once you let one in then you may need to let them all in. Definitely not worth all the hassle as ulitmately they are about selling products and by letting them in you have partially "endorsed" endorsed these products.

The only exception would be presentations done by your current 401(k) administrator.

You may safely advise your employees that this seminar is on offer and that they may attend if they so choose, however, the seminar will not be at their worksite, it will not be paid for by the employer, and they cannot take time off from their regularly-scheduled work hours to attend (if they so choose).

I think it depends on the scope of the seminar too. General information on financial planning is completely different than investment advice.

On a side note, I've met with a vendor from CO that offers financial planning as a voluntary benefit. It could be employer-sponsored although that makes me a little uneasy. Any thoughts from you HR folks on this tpe of benefit?

Thanks, all. Our EAP provider clariifed that this is just on budgeting, so I assume it will only draw the less experienced employee, but who knows? I think this economic meltdown has chilled the enthusiasm of some managers bringing friends in.

The companies that I have worked for have always been on the cautious side using there plan vendors to conduct informational/educational workshops. We always told employees to seek advise from their tax advisor or financial planner. One day, I realized that some staff did not have one nor did they know where to find one. If you are interested in providing information about financial planners, etc. you may want to direct employees to their banking organization or maybe even use the Financial Planning Association (www.PlannerSearch.org). They have a lot of literature which would allow your employees to seek the service out on their own.
