Is anyone considering closing the offices between Christmas and New Year's as a combination plant shutdown and green activity to conserve utilities? We would like to do this and apply it towards employee vacation accounts. Otherwise, unpaid. Thanks, all.

If you are not closed for a full calendar week, then exempt employees would have to have a full weeks pay -- even if they have run out of vacation time.

That said, I would notify employees asap...because many may not have saved enough vacation time for this. I know one large company (HP) that does this, but it is communicated on date of hire and is unchangable.

I have never heard of a company doing so for a "green" reason except to save the company greenbacks ($s). The employees will see through the reason.
