I'm a little out of date on starting salaries for HR professionals. This is for an MBA with some part time HR (OD) work experience as an intern. State is Colorado - no prior directly relevant work experience. Any insights into what a reasonable starting salary range might be? I'm guessing upper 50's but would appreciate any additional insights.

How many other HR positions are there in the company? What do they make? How many employees are there in the company? What percentage of HR responsibilities will this person have? How much of HR is outsourced to TPAs?

I would say entry level around here (low cost of living) in a true HR position is mid $40Ks to low $50Ks for a larger company but lower for a smaller company. Honestly we wouldn't pay extra for the MBA -- especially if it is not in HR and if the prospect has no real experience in HR. Personally while I value internships, they don't count as "full" experience to me.

I agree that the mid 40's to low 50's would be an appropriate range unless this person was planning on taking major responsibility within the department. I also would not consider paying much extra to an MBA with no HR experience.

Nork in this instance I see no relevance to the MBA. All of the experience is apparently as an intern and we both know how that can be.

The last new MBA I hired had NO real work experience other than stereotypical student jobs in landscaping, fast food, etc. He had NO internships of any kind. I hired him as an HR Assistant and paid him $17 an hour. He did a good job. Of course when my company downsized he left. he now works in sales on the West Coast.

Set your pay based on the level of the position and the current market rate for that level of position.

MBA is a great credential but of little value in non management positions.

Wow, $40 to low $50 starting out? I guess wages must be higher in CO than TX. Youd be doing good to get mid-$40 for an entry level HR generalist/specialist job around here. In the low $30s for HR admin. with no work experience. I agree, however, that there is a difference in pay scale form one company to another in same area. I havent observed that having an MBAs become a factor until you get up into the HR Director/VP level in larger companies.
