I was told that there was a law in NY that would require companies to pay overtime for salary positions unless they are "managers". Is that true? We are a small business and I'm still learning the standards - please advise

"Salary Positions" does not automatically mean exempt from overtime. You can be salaried non exempt or salaried exempt.

What drives whether or not you have to pay overtime is the duties of the position. In general if the person does not have much descretion in how to accomplish the job tasks it is likely non exempt and thus entitled to overtime.

This is based on federal law and you should go to the FLSA web site to read up on the rules.
