I have a friend who is trying to save money on his employees medical coverage. What he wants to do is make it so that if his employees can get insurance through their spouse, they cannot get it through his office.

I thought this was impractical, and would just encourage his employees to lie to him, and may be illegal/ discrimination against married people. I wanted to know what others thought.

His office is in New York state.

I've heard of not allowing spouses to be covered if the spouse could have coverage elsewhere, but not of what your friend proposes to do.

Your friend would to better to explore changes to plan design and/or the portion of the premium his staff must pay.

I agree with cynbrandt. And while what your friend is proposing (no pun-like-thing intended!) is not illegal discrimination against married people, it will encourage at least some of his employees to lie to him. And I have no idea how he expects to get at the truth.

While I understand his rationale, it's not the best way to manage a medical plan. For starters, many companies pay significantly less for dependent coverage than for employee coverage. So while the employee may be able to get the coverage through his or her spouse, it could be very costly. And, as the others pointed out, how are you going to enforce this? The honor code only goes so far.

The more employers forfeit the reigns of managing health care plans, the worse the problem is going to get.
