I am going to be starting up the CEBS. Curious how valuable it is? There's no avg salary survey of having it, etc. I already have a MBA and SPHR.

Based on your MBA and SPHR, I would say less valuable than the SPHR if you are at a higher level of HR (say director or above)....unless you need the further detailed knowledge of the Comp and Benefits side of HR. The SPHR is definitely better in some knowledge areas than the CEBS, but I think you will find that CEBS is more detailed in Comp and Benefits areas. Is that something that you need now or expect to need in the future?

If you are at a lower level of HR, say a generalist or under a Director where you deal with the details of HR, then it would be more valuable. Or where you need the knowledge of these areas to progress up the career ladder.

I started the CEBS fresh out of a Bachelors degree in Applied Mathematical Sciences with no real background in HR and it was valuable to me.

If you have the time and want to go for another degree/cert, this is a good one.

p.s. I don't think the designation itself will get you much more in salary, but I think the knowledge of what is learned through the CEBS program will.

I LOVE benefits but started one of the CEBS classes and have never read such boring information in my life. I absolutely could not stay awake. I also found the book to be biased and old-school; the book I used in 2006 was written in 1984 with a few revisions in 2001. I hope the other classes are more interesting. Good luck!

It really depends on what you want to do with it. If you are in Benefits/Retirement, it will make you an attractive candidate in addition to your SPHR and you MA. If you are just trying to be more well rounded and not just trying to get into or sharpen your benefits knowledge, your time would be better spent gaining some hands on experience, vs. getting certified. hope this helps!

One pro as compared to experience is that it does expose you to benefits/ideas that your specific job situation/company may not offer but that are offered in other companies. The CEBS will give you a basic knowledge in many areas rather than just one company can give you.

And many of the courses (if I remember correctly) have lots of information about different ways to accomplish HR benefits/compensation objectives.

Will it be immediately applicable? probably not. It will depend on what size company you will work for and how many areas you will be responsible for. For me, I am responsible for anything that falls under HR/benefits/payroll. The CEBS prepared me well -- maybe not with everything I need but I do know where to go to get the information and I seem to ask questions of vendors that no one else has thought about. Maybe it's just my personality though *Ü*

The value of any profession designation comes from it's recognition and respect in the "industry". In this case HR/Benefits. If you want to work in benefits, the CEBS is the badge that opens doors. That could be for in-house positions, consulting or sales.

In my experience, the CEBS courses are among the most rigorous (maybe boring at times) of the HR-professional designations. Certainly heads above the CCP for the comp folks, by comparison. (I've been in comp now for ten years).

As for its direct ROI from increased salary, I suspect it may be worth a few thousand at most. However, the real value comes from the respect, "open doors" and body of diverse benefits knowledge. You will likely move up in Benefits farther and faster on average then those without.

I did a bit of research on this sometime back and it seems CEBS is one of the only designations covering all components of Employee Benefits in the US market. There are other designations/certifications as well, however, they focus only on one or two aspects of Employee Benefits. I feel its a great designation to have for people aspiring to work for Employee Benefits Service Providers and Third Party Administrators as these entities focus on the Employee Benefits domain and have consultants and experts solely working on the Benefits domain. Moreover, IFEBP, which cosponsors this designation along with the Wharton School,is a foundations of industry experts & and so I am sure its a great designation to have for people planning to build a career in Benefits.

And the nice thing about CEBS is you can do it in stages and receive "mini certifications" that are specialized in a specific benefit if you aren't interested in the whole world of benefits/compensation but just a part.
