As HR Director of a 75 employee non-profit agency, I have been asked to develop a guideline for awards for length of service - to be presented to employees at each anniversary milestone year (5,10,15yrs.etc.) and I am at a complete loss! I have no clue as to where to even start. I can't seem to find any sample programs or basic guidelines or anything helpful from general online searches.
Can someone PLEASE PLEASE give me some award ideas for each year of recognition -up to at least 40 years. I would sooooo much appreciate anything to get me started.

You might want to do a google search on Service Recognition Awards. There's more than 10 pages of sites on this subject.

As nork3 indicated, lots of companies out there that will hook you up for service award "gifts". I suggest you need to decide (1) budget, and (2) what kind of reward program would be a fit for your culture. For instance, you can go the gift route, which can provide the employees with gift catalog options based on the budget guidelines you give the company you are buying from. Or, you can go with a service pay reward, where you give the employees a bump in pay at each service milestone, or both. You can also recognize service milestones in meetings, announcements, websites, postings, or any number of other ways.

Thanks, but I have looked at so much of that stuff and all I see are the different types of rewards.......instead of examples of different plans themselves. I'm still trying to figure out how much the award/gift should be at each step along with what is typical or acceptable at each step. I've been trying to find out what other companies typically do, just to have something to start with and maybe use as a guideline, and obviously I'm just not searching it right.

What I have seen done besides awards is to allow a sabbatical (or longer vacation time) in the xth year...just for that one year. For example, in the 5th year, the employee gets an extra week of paid vacation that must be taken all at one time. In the 10th year, they get an extra 2 weeks, etc.
So that is another option beyond straight gifts.

We award 1 extra week of vacation at the 5th and employees retain it until they reach their 20th year and then they get another week, achieving 4 weeks of vacation in all. They also choose a gift from a vendor who provides web access to a selection of gifts. We are thinking of foregoing the gifts (they are kinda cheesy!) and awarding a monetary award. It will be less costly and the employees will probably appreciate it more than the gift.

We are a small company about 55 employees. We recognize employees every 5 years. They get a small check plus a gift. Our employees tend to like clothing, so I put together a little catalog this year and they had 3 things to chose from based on what anniversary it was.
I don't remember all of the choices, but it was something like this:
(all clothing/bags came from Land's End, embroidered with logo and their name, if they chose)
5 yrs: polo shirt, beach towel or tote bag
10 yrs: Sweater, fleece vest, travel duffel
15 yrs: Parka, Business Attache or CoolPix digital camera
20 yrs: Nikon d40 camera, luggage set, or 26 in flat screen TV.
We did a big jump in the value of gifts for the 20 years since that is our largest milestone.
I made a simple catalog in Publisher, included a message from the CEO, and an order form. Then we awarded them at a luncheon. We just put the gifts into gift bags with the check ($10 for each year of service) and had the managers hand them out.
Surprisingly, with this crowd, it went over very well.
