How can I revise salary survey data for a certain position that requires more experience than the surveyed position? For instance, our position requires 10 yrs experience, but the survey position only

How can I revise salary survey data for a certain position that requires more experience than the surveyed position? For instance, our position requires 10 yrs experience, but the survey position only requires 5 yrs.

If the survey says 5 years and you require 10, then you might be looking at a higher level position.

But keep in mind that at a certain level of job, years of experience tend not to matter as much. At some point, a person is going to get all the knowledge she or he can from experience and after that point extra years don't really count.

So even though you may require 10 years of experience, it might well be the same job that only requires 5.

I agree with Nork that there are ceilings in any job....and sometimes there really is no tangible difference between 5 and 10 years experience.

But one possible solution is to iterate the salary up 5 years at x% per year COLA. Just as if the person had started at 5 years and had worked for you for 5 years. For a $40K position, that equals a little more than $50k at 5%.

Also keep in mind that salary surveys focus on job responsibilities. Years of experience and educational levels/training help clarify job classification, but ultimately it's the actual responsibilities and duties performed that are key.
