Can anyone provide advice in this instance: Non-exempt employee travels to company site in another state for several weeks when an employee suddenly quits. Recently we paid all hours going when as we felt this was an emergency situation, but then the employee took a vacation unexpectedly after the assignment but before coming home. It was not scheduled (he announced on a Thurs. that he would be gone on vacation Friday and coming back to HQ to work a week from that Monday.) Since he chose to take the vacation spur of the moment, are we obliged to pay for his time travelling home as we would have had he come home Friday or just airfare and if we must pay for travel time on the airplane on that Sunday prior to his return date, how many hours?)

This travel situation comes up often but as a planned expansion and the employee may be in the location for a couple of months or more. When an employee is on an extended stay (weeks or months), are there guidelines to follow regarding what we must reimburse or pay for after the travel day or is it by agreement. If by agreement, when are we no longer obligated to pay for lodging and meals, etc., and does anyone have a policy they could share? Thank you.
