I am currently employed at an e-commerce company in Washington state. The company is currently 16 employees in size, 4 years old, with an annual revenue of approximately $5,000,000. Management has announced that they plan on introducing a PTO package. The language of this package, upon further review, went on to say that on January 1st, 2010 would be the beginning of the ACCRUAL process, and that all employees would have to wait until at least January 1st, 2011 to use said benefit. Several of the longer-term employees have voiced disagreement with this implementation, arguing that an employee who has already been with the company for 2 or 3 years on January 1st of 2010 should already be considered to have accrued the amount of hours worked to qualify for this benefit. My question is: Is this type of implementation standard for a company of this size? It seems questionable at best. The company response is that, if employees with several years of tenure were granted their PTO on January 1st, 2010, that would imply that THEY somehow had benefits a year before the rest of the crew. Any thoughts and comments on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Is this really an accrual or a lump sum grant of PTO time? Typically, PTO is credited on a monthly or pay period basis as it is earned.

And is there going to be any carry over of unused vacation/PTO time from 2009 to 2010?

This doesn't sound very well thought out. Or it might be very well thought out and is designed to reduce the company's liabilities for 2010.

The benefits are to be awarded as a whole on January 1st, 2011. I had the same thought-the verbage 'accrual' suggests an incremental allotment of hours as they are earned...
