I work in BC, Canada and we have a Medical Services Plan (MSP)through the government that covers Doctor's visits throughout the year. It is mandatory to be covered under this plan in order to receive medical care. There is a monthly premium cost to this plan. As an employer, we have chosen to cover this monthly cost for our employees and their dependents (minor children) as a benefit. We now have an employee requesting that we also cover the cost of the MSP for her "dependent" elderly parents-in-law, who she and her husband are now taking care of. Has anyone run into this new category of "dependents"?? And does anyone include them as dependents under their plan?

1. This is a US site and as a result, there are few, if any, members who will be able to help you.

2. While I am in Canada, I am not in BC and I suspect that your MSPs are very specific to BC and BC alone.

However, I also suspect that your plan documents will contain a definition of "dependent" - when you find that definition, you'll know whether or not you have to include your employee's parents in the plan.

Can't speak to Canada, but in the US parents do not meet the definition of "eligible dependent" on most health plans.

Knowing BC as I do, parents may well be considered "eligible dependents." However, the definition will be in the plan documents.
