My company is looking at changing our health care options, for the better, and we are looking at having the employee pay part of the premiums (We currently pay 100% for the employee). I would like to present our HR VP with some figures on what other companies are doing in regards to the share the employee pays. We are located on the western slope of Colorado and I am trying to find some good comparisons.

We are a small company with less than 50 employees. I have found information on the national level but I am looking for something a little more local.

Does anyone know of a good source for this type of information?

Any of the large HR consulting/benefits firms, such as Wyatt or Mercer, would have this information.

You might also want to consider tasking your benefits broker (if you have one) with researching and providing this for you.

Here's a link to the Kaiser survey, which is free: http://ehbs.kff.org/. While the information is still national, it does break it out by region. The problem with the large, national brokers is that they don't want to work on small groups.

I wouldn't recommend jumping straight to these benchmarks, however. If you're currently paying 100% and you drop it to 80% to comply with these findings, that's quite a big hit for your employees. You should be creating a "blue print" that assesses where you currently are in regards to both plan design and contributions and where you need to get down the road, based on your business plan.

If you need a hand interpreting this survey or care to look at different surveys, just let me know: matthew@heliosnm.com.

We are a small financial firm in New York City and used to pay 100% of the medical benefits provided to staff. A number of years ago we switched to partial employee payment but still offer relatively rich benefits. We charge employees 5%, 7.5% or 10% of cost depending on their salary level. The plan was well received when the change was implemented even though 100% employer payment had been in place for decades.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics also publishes info on share of medical premiums paid by employer for single and family coverage: see tables 3 and 4 at http://www.bls.gov/news.release/ebs2.nr0.htm
and they provide info by industry, occupation, employment size, FT vs. PT, region etc.

Why do the advertisers think we would welcome their posts? Peddle your wares elsewhere, please.
If you have not already found it, there should be a local chapter of your SHRM that has a benefits survey, or at least folks you can network with.
Also, brokers are not all big national firms. There are many local brokers that will look out for your best interest and provide info on what their book of business looks like.
It is so important you make fair comparisons here. One of the biggest career mistakes I made about 18 years ago was to give the owner 'market data' he literally threw it off the table and said, YOU DON'T KNOW MY BUSINESS!!! The sage advice is, you MUST consider your companies ability to pay for the benefits you propose. Comparing them to others might just make you look like I did many years ago. When I came in with all my data, I neglected to notice we were running at a loss for the year. Now, anything I submit is after careful consideration of the business and the financial strength of the company.
Your local chamber may have some information for you as well.

Again I would like to thank everyone that provide useful information and wasnt trying to sell something. The websites provided proved very useful. I was able to locate the information I was looking for. I did also go through our broker and received the stats from her. I also made a bunch of calls to local businesses to see how they handle theres. I believe I have some reasonable stats and recommendations for my VP.

Again, thank you everyone.
