James,
We are a small nonprofit educational R&D firm. We have a pretty detailed new hire orientation, and I'd be happy to share any of it with you.
One thing we've gotten tremendous feedback about is our buddy system. Despite all the tools we offer folks (lists, manuals, HR people, trainings, internal web sites, etc.) nothing beats having someone to go to to ask your idiot question -- the one you're sure no one in the history of hiring at this org. has ever had to ask.
We ask for volunteers, and if we've run out of volunteers we recruit. We try to match the person with someone at their general level in the organization but in another project or department. This way the new person gets to meet folks outside their work area.
At the very least the new person has someone to do lunch with the first day, which we suggest if possible. We've had some wonderful connections emerge out of this system.

The buddy system described above is similar to the one we used for Workforce employees. It works. We also pay for several lunches -- the first, one after two weeks and one more about a month later.

Another part of our orientation is lunch with the CEO. We first learned about it from Granite Rock Co., an Optimas Award winner. To read about Granite Rock, go to www.workforceonline.com, click on the Research Center and type in Granite Rock.

I am in the process of creating an orientation program. Could you share yours with me?

Hey, Clumm - thanks for your response. Tried to send this directly to you, but could you email me some additional info. How you recruit? Are there "job responsibilities" of being a buddy? How you follow-up to make sure a buddy has done his/her job? Any incentives/rewards to those who serve as buddies? Is there a framework/model you use for the program? Thanks for any/all your feedback! Thanks. JIM
