I am researching the aspects of I-9 audits and how costly they can be (our sly tactic to get our people to make sure the forms are filled out accurately). Has anyone been through one of these? If so, how much do the mistakes cost? How time consuming are they? If you care to share, please email me at JAYTURKEYF@AOL.COM. I have to present this information on July 10 at a management meeting and would like to be well prepared. Thanks in advance for any help!

Last Wednesday we were raided by the INS. Our factory staff is approximately 97% hispanic (mexican) and they took every one of them. Unfortunately for us, all of them were illegal aliens, but had the appropriate documentation to prove they could work in the US (Resident Alien cards & Social Security Cards). As it turns out their documentation was illegal (INS said there was no way for us to know). So now besides doing a MAJOR recruiting and hiring blitz, we have to hand over all I9 forms from the last 3 years. We were informed there could be a $1,000 dollar fine per I9 form. Getting all forms together is extremely time consuming. We were in the process of separating them from the personnel files (had never been done). So my advise, make sure they are filled out and that you have all forms of ID from employees. Also make sure they are kept separate from the main file. We are going to use binders. If they ever come in, it could really cost your company.
