Hello,

I work for a supply chain management organisation within the aerospace industry. We are based in Central England.

I am currently scoping out a project to communicate the corporate 'core values' to the organisation. They consist of business values, such as '...to deliver continuous improvement' and behavioural values, such as '...operate with integrity'.

I am searching for ideas as to the most effective way to gain buy-in from the employees. Past initiatives or culture changing attempts have fallen on deaf ears.

I was considering compiling a series of 2-3 hour workshops with some thought inducing activities, but I am sparse on fresh ideas.

The organization I work for recently experienced a mega-merger in which two very different companies brought radically opposed points of view to the table, and we have been attempting to evluate, compromise, sort and save the best of both worlds. Core values are one of the most important issues. The question keeps coming up as to "whose core values?" The most important points about values that have emerged are (1) be sure every employee, down to the lowest on the totem pole, feels important (valued) and has a means of "buying-in" to the overall organizational process. (2) attempt to install a sense of higher purpose in your employees. Everyone seems to perform at a much high level if realistic, common buisiness goals are established and it is demonstrated how each person can make it happen. (3) all employees must have a means of open communication and speaking out when necesssary, without fear of punishment or retaliation. This probably means ensuring that managers are ready to listen to their employees and know how to effectively do so. (4) Train your employees so they have the ability to work to capacity and take on new levels of responsibility.

As to the method you use to convey the message, almost any means that seems to fit your particular organization is OK -- workshops, e-mail, memos, seminars, departmental meetings, social engagements, sports events, or whatever, as long as it is inclusive and the objective is clear.

I'm surprised that you are not consulting the SCRIA Handbook!

You said that past initiatives have fallen on deaf ears, have you identified why?

Many people in an organisation see core values as just words and are not aware of the value of their contribution and involvement to the success of the business.

Core values reflect the type of company you work for and provide a target to aim at, a focus for commitment, and a means of measuring success.

Try to agree clear statements of what the team/individual understands each value or goal to be, what is expected of them and at the end of the workshop, carefully prepare a detailed action plan of what everyone agrees to do and review it.

Remember, healthy and productive interpersonal relationships are based on openness, trust, participation and commitment and co-operation and mutual support.

lnter-team relationships depend on the above, as well as on a recognition of shared values and goals, and the distinctive but different roles to be played by each team in the organisation.

A workshop that can clearly communicate the company values, gives individuals an awareness of their importance and what has to be done - will succeed.
