Our small computer software company did not have good job descriptions and no pay grades or ranges for them. I developed ADA compliant job descriptions and then went to the library to research grades/

l had to prepare grades/ranges for aerospace engineers. Here are some of the sources I used.
1. BLR - used like you did only for California 2. Careers/WSJ - Wall Street Journal's career site public.wsj.com/careers Provides salary information via experience, position, etc. 3. Nesnet - website for engineers, including software engineers, www.nesnet.com/nesnet/salary.htm The report of 3/99 indicated that software engineers ere the highest paid engineers across all business sectors, average wage $64,000 in 1997. 4. Department of Labor - only thing wrong with their salary information is that it is at least 1-2 years old due to the time it takes for them to compile survey data. 5. Check out local universities that offer software engineer degrees. I found that one of my universities that has an engineering department conducted a salary survey of their graduates and what they were offered and accepted upon graduating. 6. Look at the websites of your competitors. Many times they post job descriptions with salary ranges within their recruiting area. 7. Salary source - provides short job descriptions www.salarysource.com 8. WageWeb Salary Data - this was a great resource, ranges are up-to-date. www.wageweb.com Provides salary by benchmark positions. 9. Management Solutions - salary data by company size/revenue www.mgmtsolutions.com 10. IT Professional Salary Survey - provided a graphic presentation of salary data. www.wholeroot.com/avgslry.htm 11. Staffing agencies - sometimes they publish a salary survey every year, check one out that specializes in software engineers That should get you started. Have fun! |
