Safety Incentives that Work...

Anyone have any suggestions for Safety Incentives that bring results (i.e. prevention and reducing incidents)? The environment comprises several lumber yard as well as a few production facilities. Hats, t-shirts, luncheons are worn out. We also tried an award program that gives people a gift at the end of the year if they have been accident free the previous twelve months. Not real effective even though the gifts were good quality. We have committees in place, we have training and orientations...but I am looking for something unique to catch everyone's attention. Too often safety is seen as a hokey topic. I don't want to go overboard with cost, either.

Any assistance is appreciated!

We are a manufacuting firm and are in the process of implementing a new safety program. Until now, employees who had no accidents within a quarter period could pick from certain prizes (day off with pay, movie tickets etc). The employees never seemed really into the whole idea. Now what we are going to do is implement a point system. Employees who have no accidents within each quarter accumulate points for prizes. They can cash in the points during any quarter. However, each quarter the prizes get better(So those employees who let their points accumulate until the end of the year will be able to get really good prizes). The idea is to get employees to stay safe in order to accumulate points in order to get the big prizes which are at the end of the year (Like TV's, CD players etc). We are working on getting their point total printed on their paychecks so they know where they stand each pay. We may also have a separate point category for attendance, to try and encourage employees to be at work and be on time.
