Currently we have a policy manual for managers and supervisors only. We are currently investigating whether we should have an employee handbook in addition to the policy manual. Personally, I feel it is a good idea but need more backup!!! I am looking for articles, websites, info. that will give both the pro's and con's of employee handbooks. Any suggestions would be helpful!! Thanks

Hey Gayle, Barry here.
It occurs to me that if employees "don't know the rules, how can they play the game"?
You share that manager and supervisors have policy manuals. That leads me to believe that, being human, management requires a resource that will keep them abreast of the rules and requirements of the org. It appears that the employees don't have this resource. That's hardly equitable.
How does management orchaestrate performance agreements and periodic reviews? How does the employee know that their personal plan(s) of action operate within organizational boundaries without this vital resource?
I submit that not only should they have a handbook, they should also have the opportunity to exercise personal leadership and co-author it. When they possess ownership, progressivity becomes the rule, rather than the exception.
Good luck,
Barry

Gayle, there are tons of websites...I just finished "remodeling" our handbook (ended up being a complete overhall). A great site to start is: http://www.hr2000.com (there are links to knowledge point (they have excellent SOFTWARE (for about $100) that gives you a handbook.....you would just modify to your specific business. Email me if there is anything else! Teresa

Barry,
Hello, Glover here. I wholeheartedly agree with your opinion that each employee should have their own copy of the company handbook. The best way to both keep employers honest and keep employees informed is to distribute them at the orientation session, when a new employee starts with the company.
I also believe that all departmental managers should be held responsible for ensuring that their reports have a basic knowledge of how to use the handbooks to access information, and keep tabs on the company and it's policies.
Later!
