The way we have always done that is the following: Take the original date of hire and substract it out from the last date worked. For example if they were hired on April 22, 1993 and they last worked on August 10, 1998 they would have 5 years, 3 months and 8 days of service time for that time period. The easiest way to do this is as shown:
98 08 10
- 93 04 22
Be sure when you are substracting your days out to use 30 calendar days in a month. Some organizations will use the actual number of days per month. We have always assumed 30 for every month.

Then take that service time and back that date out of the new hire date. Say for instance in the example given above, that individual was rehired on February 21, 1999. You would do the following:

99 02 21
- 5 03 08
= 94 02 13
Which would result in an adjusted seniority date of February 13, 1994.

You have to keep in mind when doing your months, you have to use the "12" versus "10" like in normal math. It always works and is always correct to the day.

If you need more info or have questions, email me with your phone number and I will give you a call.
