I am presenting a program on Harassment at a predominantly male location. The issues at this location do not stem from sexual harassment, but from other types (racial, ethnic, same gender, etc). I have all of my materials for the meeting (i.e., quid pro quo, hostile environment, etc) but I was hoping someone could assist me with a few good examples of harassment that is not specifically sexual. Maybe small scenarios I can present and then ask the audience if this constitutes harassment. I have so much stuff on the male/female and not enough to address the male-to-male needs. Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Just about any self-esteem attack will do, Caryn. Short jokes, fat jokes, bald jokes, personality (or lack therein) jokes, athletic prowess (or lack of) comments, mechanical skills (or not) comments, who-wears-thepants jokes, wardrobe comments, and how much one makes/where one shops comments. And then the typical "brown-noser" tag...

The list goes on and on. Does that help?

Think of any attacks on masculinity which derive themselves from the competition in the workplace in certain jobs among men. Also think of the males who are disparaged because they aren't into the more traditional male roles, e.g. football and sexual jokes. Hope this helps. TB

I recently presented to a predominantly male, racially integrated union manufacturing plant. I got their attention by beginning the topic like this.

"Harassment is not about finding another person sexually attractive. Harassment is about one-upsmanship. Everyone of you know what I mean--perhaps you were at a party with jeans on and everyone else had on Dockers, you had facial hair and they did not--you felt the looks behind and around you, and felt uncomfortable. Or perhaps you went to a car dealership and did not get the service you deserved because the salesman did not believe you made enough money to be a serious buyer."

I continue in this vein until every eye in the house has registered the feeling. Then I say, "That is what any harassment does - it attempts to make the doer 'feel superior' by making the recipient feel 'low'. This type of behavior is unacceptable, and contributes to what is called a "Hostile Work Environment". As we view the videos today, I want you to notice how, in almost every case, it's a matter of one-upsmanship - not a true caring about someone and wanting to say, date them.

God bless you in your efforts! It's a challenge worth doing.
