Outplacement services aren't often used for mass layoffs because of the expense, and since today's economy is experiencing a lot of mass layoffs, it looks like the use of outplacement services is decreasing. For individual terminations however, the rate of use has remained steady.

I have acquaintances in the Outplacement Industry and what they are seeing is a continuation of outplacement packages for executives and upper management. This is primarily off site outplacement lasting several months. On-site outplacement for everyone else appears to be on the increase. These are normally one or several days of training on resume preparation, networking techniques, etc.

Most of the clients of these acquaintances ahve 1000 or more employees. They have seen significant drop in these services with smaller employers.

One interesting trend I've seen is the increase of firms selling outplacement services. For instance, Snelling (whose normal business is placing office and admin people) recently started offering outplacement services...
