I heard of an interesting technique the other day to get someone to fess up to doing something wrong. It's a bit of a gamble, and so you would have to be fairly certain that you know who the problem is. A private investigator was brought in to a company that was having vandalism issues. They were 99% sure of who it was but had no hard proof. The P.I sat at a desk with a 'packet of photo's' in front of him. They called in the gentleman in question, and told him that they had proof that he was the issue. Never said anything about the 'pictures', just let them sit there. He told the guy that they had enough to fire him, but if wanted to admit to the problem and resign, they would not press charges making it much easier for the guy to find alternative employment. The guy admitted everything, stating that he didn't know what had gotten into him, he'd been having trouble at home, etc. He resigned. The envelope did not contain any pictures.

This is a crime, call the police and have them advise you how to investigate.

Just when I thought I'd heard everything! I agree with MOMAXWELL; this is much more than simple vandalism. This is a very disturbed person with some serious issues. You must have big costs involved with cleaning this up. This also puts your other staff in an unhealthy situation. What if one of them sues because of the health issues, saying that you're not doing enough to stop the situation? Because you're not. You have to act immediately, not just to stop it but to identify the perpetrator. DNA may be one way to solve the mystery, but only if you can get samples from everyone, and there may be legal issues there. Hire an attorney and an investigator and get it resolved. Now! Good luck.

I agree with nork. It's not like these acts are going to be ignored or not noticed by the next few people who use the facilities.

If there's crap smeared around, the very next person is going to say something about it. The same is true for a clogged toilet.

Put a camera on the outside, and you'll catch the person fairly quickly. The only question is whether you'd have to give the employees notice that cameras may be used in public areas, or if you already have something to that effect in place... or if you even need to (I'd think you would, but I'm not sure on that).

We use ID badges and scanners to gain access to the bathroom due to sales people abusing bathroom privileges. The swipe time stamps things automatically.

I work in a food processing environment and we, too, have had issues with a female spreading the same cheer. We have up to 120 employees off on a 15 minute break, I can't see how a key would work in our environment. We are a culturally diverse company with varying degrees of English comprehension. We met with each department of ladies, explained what's been happening and mentioned that sometimes if people are on medication they may not make it to the toilet, or in some cultures you put your feet on the toilet (and if it misses too bad). We talked about how it impacts every female who needs to use the facilities, the cleaners who have to look after this mess, and the total disrespect it brings to the workplace, regardless of culture. We also said that if someone knows who it is it's their obligation to report as this is supposed to be a clean and safe area for all employees. Since the talks we haven't had another incident, a lot of heads were hanging low but so far so clean.
