We are working on standardizing office supplies to save money. An employee asked for a box of special pens that are pricey. I want to tell her that we aren't making special orders and if she wants a different pen, it is her repsonsibility to purchase them (out of her own pocket). My only fear is that she could come back with a Workers' Comp claim from using 'regular' pens. Am I being too paranoid? Plus, this opens the door to 'ordering for one, ordering for all.'
Thoughts?

Is the employee claiming some kind of potential harm that would come from using the standard pens? What's the basis for her wanting these pricier pens?

The basis is that she says that it's easier on her hands to use pens that have the rubber grip on them. She hasn't made a big deal about having to have them, but I also haven't told her yet that I don't plan on ordering them.
I'm just really wondering if it's acceptable to tell employees that we order basic pens and any 'special' needs will need to be a personal purchase.

You can purchase reusable big rubber grips that fit over any pen or pencil.
