I work for a bank and we are looking at changing how we designate AVP's and VP's. I was wondering what other companies are doing. Thanks

I know the banking industry has many levels of titles and often those don't match to other industries. And you will find companies within industries have different titles.

At one point, it was seen as a cheap recruiting/promotional tool.

From my personal perspective, a VP would be an executive that reports to a Chief xxx Officer.

I am also in the banking industry. When I first came onboard everybody and his or her brother was either a VP or an AVP. If someone was doing a good job, they were rewarded with a nice title. I have since that time gotten us to a point where VP's are truly doing executive level work. We no longer have any AVP's in our organization. Banks are notorious for handing out lofty job titles.

I worked for a bank for some time also and it was explained to me that many positions in the bank required the employee to be an Officer either for bond or signing purposes and that's why VP's were so common. Because of some state laws, we had to have separate companes in some states, so again, branch pesonnel were officers because there was no one else. Depending on the size of the branch the head teller could be a VP!
